College football kicked off last night with offensive powerhouse Boise State going up against an equally dangerous offensive team in Oregon.  Everybody expected this game to be in the high 20's or maybe the low 30's; however, the game transformed into a defensive battle making it less entertaining.  The game featured only 27 points combined with the final score being Oregon 8 and Boise State 19.  The real "entertainment", I use that term loosely, came at the end of the game when Oregon RB, LeGarrette Blount punched Boise State's Byron Hout in the face after Hout allegedly taunted him.  You can see the punch below at this address:

http://msn.foxsports.com/video/CFB?vid=41ebaafe-d619-4cb8-bea5-ba79870d2176

All the guy did was tap Blount on the shoulder pad and he catches five knuckles in the chin.  I think Blount should be kicked off of the team.  I understand that he was frustrated because of the loss and probably because of his stat-line: 8 rushes for -5 yards.  He is a senior and he acts like this after a loss, that is ridiculous. This guy needs to be kicked of the team and possibly criminally charged!!!!

Celine Dion and Ron Artest go together like cereal and mayonnaise yet somehow the self proclaimed "thug", Artest, makes it work.  The guy is known for his wild antics such as going into the crowd and beating up a fan, but it seems that Artest is beginning to display a softer side.  As a Laker fan I love that we are bringing a little crazy on our team because a team can always use a little crazy, right? Although he can't carry a tune and the video is clearly irritating you get a sense that he means what he is singing which makes is somewhat enjoyable to watch.  I am going to stop talking about it and just let you watch it:

I understand that Shaquille O'neal is a man that transcends just the NBA, but watching him attempt to play against other athletes in their own sport is extremely difficult to swallow.  Watching Shaq attempt to swing a bat was like watching a baby giraffe trying to walk.  It was hard to watch yet I could not take my eyes off of it, like a car accident.  The 7'1" O'neill attempted to out-slug Albert Pujols, out-spike beach volleyball stars Misty May and Kerri Walsh, and out-throw Ben Roethlisberger, needless to say he could not out-do anybody at anything.  The show is a half hour too long and the hosts are extremely annoying.  The most important part of the show, the actual competition, takes place in the last fifteen minutles of the show making the first 45 minutes irrelevant.  Here are some short examples of the show from Youtube:

I was thoroughly enjoying watching the Eagles game yesterday. I was wearing my greens, getting excited despite all the usual preseason mistakes and areas of concern. I had a can of Lager in one hand and the remote in the other, occasionally flipping over to the Steelers/Cardinals game on commercial breaks.

That's when I heard Chris Mortenson say, "Michael Vick has reached a two year deal with..."

And I thought, "spit it out Mort, I want to change the channel!"

"...the Philadelphia Eagles."

Did I really just hear that?

Five seconds later my phone lit up with text messages from all kinds of people. Family, friends, my boss at my old job, a few people whose voices I haven't heard since last football season.

An experience I will not forget but a costly event for the Birds. The stadium was rocking and the players from pumped up. I would of been happier to win something but rather been there then been home twiddling my thumbs.

The night was like a big practice where they gave out plenty of souvenirs. I did get a flight night towel so I am glad for that. The night did cost us a middle linebacker. Stewart Bradley went down with a torn ACL. Andy sorry for writing that I nkow you have issues of it being out in the public to read.

Now Two Eagles where cited for driving with out headlights on and possesion of weed. Parker and Herriman better hope Reid dose not lose his stack over this.

Well Count down is on this weekend is first preseason game when the Titans and To and the bills face off.

Let's take a look at the top 3 qb sleepers for the 2009 season:

Note: All stats and rankings are based on the following:
20 yards passing=1 point
10 yards rushing= 1 point
Td's= 6 points
Fumble/Int= -2 points

3. David Garrard
08: 3620 passing yards 15 passing td's 13 INT's 322 yards rushing 2 rushing td's

This guy always seems like a perennial sleeper. He finally came out of his shell a little bit last season, passing for 1111 more yards than the previous season, though he did play in 4 more games. Last year he was the 11th best qb, and yet is consistently ranked lower than 15 for the upcoming season. He should be able to crack the top 10 qb's this year given the addition of aging, yet talented, receiver Torry Holt. In addition, Garrard is effective at creating points with his legs, rushing for 322 yards and 2 td's last season. What keeps Garrard from being a top tier qb (besides his lack of receivers), is his lack of passing td's. For a man with 3600+ yards passing, 15 td's is a very small number. Cassel and Pennington passed for nearly identical yardage last season, and they had 21 td's and 19 td's respectively. If Garrard could ever pass for td's like he did in 07' (when he had 18 td's in only 12 starts) and have the health he did in 08', he could easily eclipse 20 passing td's. While I'm not so convinced of this that I will make him my starting qb, Garrard will make a terrific backup with the potential to catapult himself into a starting fantasy gig.

Three wide receivers who will give you the most return value in 09'.

Note: All rankings are based on following stats
10 receiving yards= 1 point
All td's= 6 points

3. DeSean Jackson
08: 912 receiving yards 2 rec. td's 96 yards rushing 1 rushing td

Opinions vary widely on Jackson. Yahoo Sports! projects Jackson as the 30th best wr this season. My fantasy magazine has him at #19. His adp 57.51, puts him as the 21st receiver taken in an average draft. With so many varying opinions, it should be quite common to see drafts in which Jackson is taken too high and too low. He was the 30th best receiver last year, and really faded down the stretch. In fact the only games in which he topped 100 yards receiving were in weeks 1 and 2. His yardage waned considerably in the second half of the season. To top it all off, Jackson displayed little skill in the endzone, catching only 2 td's. So far it seems like Jackson is more of a bust than a sleeper, but this can be beneficial. It will be beneficial because many owners may know this and intentionally shy away from Jackson. However, he now has help thanks to the Eagles draft which landed them Maclin and McCoy. These guys should help spread the field and take attention away from Jackson. In addition, it is very odd that the speedy Jackson never burned defenses for long yardage catches after the first 2 weeks. He has the speed and the moves, and McNabb's got the arm. I would expect to see more of these long catches this season, and I would expect Jackson to come down with more td's this season, as he only caught 2 of McNabb's 23 last year. My advice: if Jackson slips past pick #60 I reccomend drafting him. If he slips past #75 definitely draft him. However, there are too many proven stars to justify taking him below pick #45.

The First thing Andy did when he became coach was to bring in Jim Johnson. Now is Big Red's chance to pay Homage to JJ.

Rest in peace!

I think it might be time for a rookie salary cap. The fact only a handful of 1st round Rookies are signed. It proves that the Agents are doing their job and sticking it to the NFL. I am dismayed that Maclin is not catching D Mac passes today. I can only hope he signs soon. He needs to get his Reps.

River City Dreamin'

Camp is just days away in the wonderful city of San Antonio, TX.  When thinking of the previous location, Oxnard and the years that training camp has been spent over there, the only thing that comes to mind is:  Screw California.  Raiders and Chargers and 49ers and a Governor who tried to kill Christian Bale in the latest Terminator movie.  Yuk!  My hatred of that west coast state aside, there is nothing like a Texas team preparing for the upcoming NFL season in Texas.  That being said, I think it's time to take a look at the Dallas Cowboys from the Owner down to the towel boy (Mickey Spagnola).  Part one, JWJ.

Jerry Jones.

Jerrel Wayne Jones was born on October 13, 1942 in Los Angeles, California.  Jerry's family came to their senses and relocated to Arkansas when he was just a baby boy.  In his teens, he was a star running back at North Little Rock High School, and was awarded a football scholarship from the University of Arkansas.  As co-captain and starting guard of the 1964 squad, the team went 11-0, beat Nebraska in the Cotton Bowl, and won the national championship.  Following his graduation in 1965, Jones was hired as an executive vice president at Modern Security Life of Springfield, Missouri, his Father's insurance company.  He passed on an opportunity to buy the AFL's San Diego Chargers in 1967, opting to further his degree at Arkansas.  He received a master's in business in 1970, and then ventured into oil and gas exploration in Oklahoma.  After two decades in the oil and gas game, Jones entered the world of professional sports in 1989, purchasing the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Stadium for $140 million.
