Eagles -VS- Cowgirls...Week 2

Hello Eagles fans,

Being that our beloved Iggles are gearing up to go into Dallas to face the hated Cowgirls, I feel obligated to share with you my most memorable Cowgirls moments. Since this is my blog, I can call that pop-warner football team in Dallas just whatever I feel like at the moment, so please enjoy it with me.

To start out I am from El Paso, Texas, I know what you are thinking but my deep rooted hatred for the Cowgals might be a little different than most Eagles fans my age. You see growing up in Texas and loving sports you are overwhelmed with football. Friday nights were and will forever be rituals where small drilling towns, stop production to go and see the youngsters kill themselves on the field for the good of tradition. From the big cities to the small Western Texas towns, Football is a religion.

The head of the church in Texas are the Cowboys and every one is supposed to follow suit and love their father’s teams. For some reason I always despised all of my father’s teams, and I mean all of them. Dodgers, Lakers and above all the Cowgirls were the sexy teams in the late 80’s and early 90’s. To this day I hate them all, I revel in the way Kobe can’t win without Shaq, and how the Dodgers have been a joke in baseball.

My love for the Birds began on a chilly November afternoon when I was nine years old.

I saw these ugly green uniforms with wings on their helmets, and they were absolutely punishing Troy Aikman. The pain and disgust in the faces of all the drunken men in my uncle’s living room was wonderful. It brought a smile to my face after having to be the last in line waiting for some measly pieces of gravy less turkey and some burnt rolls. I fell in love, I became the enemy and now I instantly became part of the team.

Every time I saw Aikman hit the turf, I pumped my fist and grit my teeth as my Uncle asked why I was happy. “Because we are winning” I said as he scowled at my father. Then after falling in love with the Gang Green defense, it happened, he happened. Number twelve stepped onto the field and I saw my older cousins whisper to each other “Watch him, you’ll see what I mean”. I can hear those words in my head every time I think of him. Tall, skinny and with a towel flinging in the air, he mesmerized me for the rest of my days.

The Ultimate Weapon they called him, he single handedly revolutionized the QB position. He ran by, around, through and next to the Cowboys, they could not touch him and like me were mesmerized by his ability. As everyone else cursed and yelled at their team to hit him, I stated with a very stern smile, “They can’t”. Thus it began, like the first time that cold beer hits your lips after a long day, it was what you have been waiting for.

That game sealed the deal for me, we killed the Cow-dungs and my team was awesome.

I fixated myself towards every single player on the team, I wanted to find out everything, names, colleges, numbers, height, weight, everything. Then after another joyful scoring drive when Jackson caught a pass in the end zone, and some of the older men in the room sighed and walked out for a smoke to calm down. I found out one of the best players on my new team played in my home town college team, I exploded. The love affair began and that day will forever be the beginning of the addiction for the Birds.

It truly was a time for giving thanks, thank you Lord for the Eagles.

Now with a has-been QB, the worst receivers in the game and young front seven, we hope to just stay with the mighty Cowgirls for a couple of quarters and then crumble. The NFL skeptics are out there, but when we were in every Championship game, Reid was a genius. Now there are so many doubters out there it insane how people flip flop on team from year to year. Loyalty is what makes us who we are, win or lose I will always bleed green.

The NFL wants the Cowboys on top because they have that crybaby marketing trophy Owens. The feel good story of the league Romo, the new Al Davis (Jerry Jones) giving every single criminal a chance at redemption. I rather do feel bad for Romo because I want him to have many bruises after the game. I don’t hate him yet, but I want him to know how Eagles fans bleed with their team, how we need this to get through our week.

For those who think that I am being a little drastic, this is not for you. I apologize. To me our team is strong because Donovan is strong and ready for the rest of this season. At the end of his career Crybaby Johnson (T.O.) is going to look back and wonder what could have been, if he would have realized the best thing for him was to stay in Philly. Personally I am glad he’s gone I would rather have three Greg Lewis’s than another Crybaby and struggle back to the top and that is the truth.

As we head into Monday’s game I will be pumped and cussing at the T.V…win or lose.

Go Eagles!
