Paulie Beernuts reviews the Eagles running back situation.

So…yesterday the team addressed a glaring hole in the back field of this west coast offence….they signed a real full back.

Fullback Leonard Weaver has agreed to a one-year contract with Philadelphia, giving the Eagles a much-needed blocker in the backfield.

Weaver spent his first four seasons with Seattle. He ran for 130 yards and caught 20 passes for two touchdowns last season.

The Eagles played without a true fullback most of last season, and it cost them in several short-yardage situations. Converted halfback Tony Hunt started but was cut after seeing limited action. Defensive tackle Dan Klecko was moved to fullback and Kyle Eckel was signed off waivers to add depth.

Weaver, 6-foot and 242 pounds, is a solid blocker and can be effective with the ball. He has 356 yards rushing (4.4 yards per carry) and one TD in 46 career games. He also has 60 receptions for 547 yards.

When I think west coast offence I think of a Roger Craig/Tom Rathman backfield. Where the fullback not only runs the ball once in a while but is used as a receiver out of the backfield on a semi-regular basis. That has been lacking in our offence. We have not utilized the fullback position as it was intended to be used in this offence.

I am also hoping that the look for a big power back to offer a change up to Westbrook and take some of the workload off of him and extend his longevity. He needs to be kept fresh, so that in the 4th quarter when the opponent’s defense is tired he can run all over them.

It has been proven that you do not need a dominating runner to win the superbowl, but a dominating running game.  Whether or not you do this with 2, 3 or 4 backs does not matter. As long as the other team has to worry about the run, it will help the QB and the passing game. Also being able to control the ball and the clock is not a bad thing either…LOL

I would like to see the Eagles acquire another back that is a change from Westbrook, not a Westbrook wannabe.

So what do you guys think? Paulie Beernuts wants to know your opinion…so post your comments, and have a great day!
